Purpose of the project

To communicate cancer awareness information and provide cancer resource navigation services to promote early-stage cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment.  If diagnosed and treated early while in the organ of origin before the cancer spreads to adjacent tissue, lymph nodes and other organs, the chance for survivability is greater and, in some cases, can lead to a cure.

The Project provides a unique, comfortable and compassionate environment within a library setting for trained volunteers to meet with visitors and respond to their needs for information and support resources.  Our efforts will be devoted to providing helpful Cancer awareness information and resources to increase knowledge and lighten the burden of Cancer.

Cancer information center volunteers will include Cancer survivors and oncology professionals who can relate to visitors feelings about Cancer and can provide emotional support.  Focus will be on healthy lifestyles, Cancer prevention and awareness of Cancer signs and symptoms, self-exams and screening tests to help in early Cancer detection.

We hope that this center will convince visitors that if Cancer is detected and treated early while in the organ of origin, there is hope for survivability and a cure.  No-cost Cancer related services will include:

- Audio and videotapes/DVDs
- Brochures, pamphlets and books
- Internet searches
- Cancer education programs
- Cancer screening events
- One-on-one support

Throughout the year, the Cancer information center  will coordinate with Cancer organizations in support of nationally recognized events and programs designed to heighten the awareness of resources available to help in the fight against Cancer.    Typical activities will include:

- National Cancer Awareness Months
- Display Awareness Ribbons on tower
