"Walk for the Light" Fundraiser

Our “Walk for the Light” fundraiser will be held Saturday, September 12th, 2009 beginning at 4pm until midnight.  This walk will take place along the Riverfront in the Metropolis Street area through Frelinghuysen Street.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will be used for the construction of a fully functioning lighthouse and cancer information kiosk. This lighthouse will overlook the Ohio River near Dorothy Miller Park as described in this website.  We have a goal of $200,000.  The Hope Light foundation is a 501c3 non for profit corporation, so all donations are tax deductible. We currently have two ongoing fundraising efforts. The first is the raffle of a Kubota RTV 500 (Click HERE for details) and the second is the sale of commemorative bricks to be used around the Lighthouse.

“Walk for the Light” is a family-oriented event where participants can walk or run on a track relay style for 8 hours.  Participants are welcome to camp around the track. When they are not taking their turn walking, they are able to take part in other fun activities.  Former and current cancer patients, their families, and the public are invited to take part in this exciting team relay event.  The teams will consist of individuals representing corporations, clubs, organizations and families.  We would ask the various civic groups and clubs, as well as area businesses to begin a serious fundraising effort to help this worthwhile goal. Any type of project will be appreciated. The culmination of all of these fundraising efforts will be the Walk for the Light on September 12th.

Because this event will be quite long and exhausting, we look toward local businesses to help out in donations for our participants.  We need food, drink, and gift certificates of all kinds to help make our event fun and rewarding.  If you like, you can certainly set up a booth with your profits benefiting the construction of the Lighthouse. We expect to have more than 200  participants, ranging from children to persons in their sixties.  Most of our participants will be between the ages of 25 -50, and at least 65 percent of them will be female.

Cancer touches so many people in our community and The Hope Light Foundation is a great way to help bring awareness of this terrible disease.  The  38 foot tall operating Lighthouse will be a beacon of hope for cancer patients and survivors, with their family and friends. Please seriously consider this request and let your neighbors, customers, and community know that you are joining them in this cause.

Other needs

Perhaps you will also want to help by becoming a volunteer for the Cancer Information Center.  Send an email to help@hopelightmetropolis.com to let us know what you'd like to do.  If you prefer, our committee chairman Bill Carrell can arrange a date and time for you to attend an upcoming committee meeting to present your ideas.

Here is a partial "shopping list" of possibilities:

- Serve as a member of our planning committee.  We need your ideas and willingness to devote yourself to this project.

- Become a volunteer host/hostess at the Cancer Information Center.  We're looking for Cancer survivors and oncology professionals who can relate to visitor's feelings about Cancer and provide emotional support.

- Organize a fund-raising project for your church or other organization.

- Assist the City of Metropolis with grounds-keeping at the center.  It would be wonderful for someone or an organization to create and care for a annual/perennial garden.

- How else can you help?

"With your help, we can work together to reduce the burden of Cancer in
Southern Illinois.  Thank you for anything you can do in this life-saving effort."
