About the project
Mission
Communicate cancer awareness information and
provide cancer resource navigation services to impact cancer prevention,
cancer victim survivorship and save lives. We believe that the fight
against cancer begins with knowledge
Objective
Reduce the burden of cancer
and loss of lives by providing knowledge and services to increase early
cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment while in the organ of origin.
If detected early before the cancer spreads to adjacent tissue, lymph nodes
and other organs, survivability may be increased and may lead to a cure.
Major elements
A 35’ high white conical tower structure with
an attached Cancer Information Center located at the entrance to
the beautiful Dorothy Miller Park on the bank of the Ohio River in
Metropolis, Illinois.
The Hope Light will consist
of a 35’ high lighthouse tower constructed on the bank of the Ohio River
at the entrance to the beautiful and peaceful Dorothy Miller Park in
Metropolis, Illinois. The Hope Light will be used to draw
attention to cancer awareness information publications that will be
available in the facility at no cost to all visitors.
Additionally, it will serve as a “beacon of hope” in the Heartland and
throughout the nation for cancer patients, cancer survivors and their
family and friends.
The lighthouse tower will consist of a
lantern room at the top with a white-light flashing beacon and
distinctive teal daymark band below representing the fight against
ovarian cancer. It will be an operational navigational aid
requiring approval by the US Coast Guard and the Army Corps of
Engineers.
